How Did the “Africa Cries Out” Medical Team Set Up Their First Outreach Booth in New York?

Original by Xu Jun — May 18, 2026

On May 17, 2026, Kissena Park in Flushing, New York was vibrant with green lawns and bustling crowds. People gathered to listen to health seminars, watch lion dances, enjoy foods from around the world, and pick up free gifts. The atmosphere was festive and full of life.

It turned out that the annual Health Day of the Association of Chinese American Physicians (ACAP) was being held there.

With the support and planning of ACO President Chris Leo, MD, Africa Cries Out (ACO) set up its very first promotional booth in New York—our first time “setting up shop.”

Families Serving Together

Dr. Wei Liu (far left), one of ACAP’s key organizers, sat at the Africa Cries Out booth with her daughter Kelly Zhu (second from left). Howard (center) and Joshua Li (second from right) also arrived early to help with outreach.

Joshua Li, son of Dr. Baoqing Li, graduated college this year. He has already traveled to Senegal four times with the Africa Cries Out medical team. He has witnessed firsthand the lack of medical resources in remote African regions and watched his father and other medical workers serve patients with patience and sincerity.

He said:

“We may not be able to solve every problem, but we can visit them every year and bring hope.”

These experiences deeply moved Joshua and inspired him to follow in the footsteps of the Africa Cries Out medical team—he hopes to become a doctor and serve the poor and vulnerable.

Throughout the event, Joshua became a focal point for the youth. He shared stories from Africa, answered questions patiently, and inspired many teens to say they wanted to join next year’s trip.

A Family Shaped by Service

Dr. Wei Liu traveled to Senegal for the first time in 2026, bringing her daughter Kelly and son Kevin. Under scorching heat—nearly 120°F—they trekked long distances into a leprosy village. The two children worked alongside the youth team for more than ten hours a day, never complaining.

Their hearts were full of love.

Dr. Liu and the team modeled a life of service for their children. Even after returning to the U.S., the fire in their hearts continued to burn.

Kelly said she wants to study medicine to serve the people of Africa. Kevin hopes to study law to better serve society.

As a family, they decided:

“Next year, we’re going back to Africa.”

The Backbone of the Team

Kevin Chen, affectionately called “KFC,” is the core coordinator of Africa Cries Out’s on-the-ground operations in Africa. He and his son Howard have traveled to Africa twice.

At the New York event, they worked side by side to set up the booth and answer visitors’ questions. Howard stayed at the booth all day, patiently responding to everyone—deeply touching those who met him.

Capturing Africa Through a Lens

Craig, one of the team’s two main photographers, traveled to Africa in March with his daughter Claire. His short videos—fast-paced, high-quality, and emotionally powerful—captured both raw reality and inspiring moments.

He and Claire also came to the New York event to support the team. Reuniting with fellow volunteers brought joy and excitement, and everyone promised:

“See you in Africa next year.”

Recognition and Partnership

During the event, ACAP President Dr. Ziqiang Zhu presented a certificate to the Africa Cries Out team. He expressed ACAP’s desire to deepen collaboration in free medical care and other charitable efforts.

He also said he may bring his own children to Africa next year.

Why Are More People Drawn to Africa?

As I finished writing this report, one question lingered in my mind:

Why are more and more people eager to go to Africa? Why does the Africa Cries Out team keep growing?

Perhaps because deep within every human heart lies a kind of love— a love waiting to be awakened, to be ignited, to be poured out.

My dear friend, if your heart is stirred, take action. Contact us. Join the Africa Cries Out team.

I can tell you with confidence:

On this road of sharing love, you will never regret it. You will only feel that you haven’t done enough.
