A Boy with No Anus by Jun Xu, December 2024 Africa Cries Out Report 022

A Life Was Born Recent photo of El Haji   On December 25, 2023, a little life was born in Fatige, a remote leprosy village in Senegal. Farin Drameh welcomed his second son with joy. The child's eyes were big and round, and his cry was like an eagle in the wilderness of Senegal. He named this beautiful boy El Haji Saidou Drameh. However, the sky of joy was soon shrouded in shadows. The midwife told Farin solemnly: "Your son was born without an anus. This is anal atresia." The bad news was like a bolt from the blue, and the [...]

Good News: The “Africa Cries Out” Technical School has 200 Graduates! by Jun Xu 9/19/24 African Cries Out Report 2024-019

Since ancient times, parents have emphasized on their children the value of good education, hence they encourage their children to study hard, hoping to help them change their fate and live a better life. There are many stories such as "Mother Meng’s Multiple Relocations", and there are also classics such as "Liang Shanbo and Zhu Yingtai" and "Carp Leaping Over the Dragon Gate" illustrating the importance of education, especially in Chinese parents’ mind. The blood of the ancient people still flows in our bodies and is passed down, and it is this blood that ignites us to help "African children" bring [...]

Africa Cries Out Senegal Medical Team: A Dentist’s Reflections by Joyce Goujun Ma August 14, 2024 Africa Cries Out Report 2024 018

As a dentist, I have participated many times in poverty alleviation medical teams organized by international organizations. This time, I was privileged to join the "Africa Cries Out" Senegal Medical Team and brought my high school son with me. I wish to share some of my reflections on this trip. Departure: Our African Journey In the past, when I participated in free clinics, I didn't have to worry about medical equipment and consumables. But this time, I heard that the dental facilities and treatment conditions at the "Africa Cries Out" base are still in their infancy. Therefore, before departure, another Filipino [...]

In West Africa, An 11-year Dream Came True by Jun Xu, July 2024 Africa Cries Out Report 2024 017

I. For Our Patients Senegal, located in West Africa, has a tropical savanna climate. It has two seasons – dry season that runs from November to May, and rainy or wet season from June to October. During the dry season, temperatures average between 72°F and 86°F. There are neither early warblers competing for warmth, nor the new swallows looking for spring mud. During the wet season, temperature can reach as high as 120 Fahrenheit. Torrential rains come from time to time, and it is during this wet season that the dormant mosquitoes bites multiply, bringing malaria, yellow fever and diarrhea are [...]

Testimony by Nathan Jiang July 2024 Africa Cries Out Report 016

I went on my first mission trip as an 11-year-old in 6th grade. Just a short one-week trip to Mexico with our church and a sister church, where I did a lot of the same things our youth did in Nicaragua. Some of you may be surprised that I went at such a young age and why I did so. I went because of my parents, who I’m sure had the best intentions for me, encouraging me to experience the hardship that many people around the world face. But I did not have a motivation to go on that trip. As [...]

Rekindling the First Love — My 2nd Volunteer Trip to Africa by Shao Yuan May 24, 2024 Africa Cries Out Report 2024 014

In March 2024, my daughter and I went to Senegal, Africa for the second time to participate in the  Africa Cries Out volunteer medical mission.  Doctor Xiao Yang asked me curiously: Why do you want to go to Africa again?  Yes, why? I also asked myself in my heart...   Dream Realized in Africa Time flashes back to March 2023. Since I learned about Dr. Xu's volunteer medical mission in Senegal, Africa in 2019, and saw the deeds of Dr. Faye and Pastor Anna on the ACO website, I have been looking forward to setting foot on that land and planned to participate [...]

Senegal, Africa: Volunteer Medical Mission–Blessed Again By Jenny Zhao May 24, 2024 Africa Cries Out Report 2024 013

This year, my child and I participated again in the Africa Cries Out Mission Trip in Senegal, and my heart was still full of anticipation as the first time. This time, my child started preparing early and kept sharing her experiences of the last mission trip with her circle of friends. There were several of her friends who were very interested, but their parents had more concerns, and most of them did not go. One parent agreed and prepared to go, but because she signed up too late, she could not go, so we could only encourage her to sign up earlier next time.   Coming with [...]

Experiences of a First Timer By Xiaochuan (Shawn) Liang Africa Cries Out Report 2024 012

As someone who has never been to Africa before, I was very excited and nervous during the trip and was always wondering what else would be in store. The work was exciting, but even if it sometimes felt monotonous, there was still a clear purpose and a sense of accomplishment in the work I was doing. For example, on the first day, I ended up spending a few hours just sorting medicine, which is not the most engaging activity. However, seeing the bags pile up after a while, a tangible representation of the support I was giving helped dull any sense [...]
